Ex-minister Yossi Peled, 73, a former IDF general, suffered a heart attack Sunday and was taken to Ichilov Hospital in Tel Aviv, where he is under anesthesia and artificial respiration.
The hospital said that he has undergone an operation and his condition is defined as serious.
In the Likud primaries held in December, 2008, Peled was placed in the 15th slot and began serving as an MK after the elections to the 18th Knesset. After the establishment of the 32nd government he was appointed Minister without Portfolio, and was in charge of Holocaust survivors as well as former members of the South Lebanon Army who immigrated to Israel.
In September, 2012, he resigned from the government and Knesset and was appointed chairman of the Eilat-Ashkelon pipeline.
Peled was born in Belgium as Yosef Mendelevich. He spent World War Two with his sisters in the care of an adoptive Christian family. His father was murdered in Auschwitz. He served as a commander in an infantry unit and later transferred to the Armored Corps. Peled served as a commander in the Six Day War, War of Attrition, Yom Kippur War and First Lebanon War.
He was Northern Command Head between 1986 and 1991.
